This cup was specifially designed with its unique slant to teach children to drink from a rim and not a spout. Starting with a small amount of liquid in the Doidy cup, the child will soon become adept at drinking from the rim.
The COMA Weaning Report of 1994 clearly recommends that:
“Infants from the age of 6 months should be introduced to a cup and the use of a bottle should be actively discouraged after the age of 1 year to prevent long-term health problems.”
The Community Nutrition Group of the British Diatetic Association briefing states:
“It is a natural developmental progression that sipping and swallowing replace sucking and hence feeding from a cup should begin around 6 months. This may seem messy and less ‘convenient’ initially, but it is a very important skill to develop.”
